Network
Issues
October 13, 2006 10:08 am
We
are having some problems with our internal networking at this time. We
have replaced a suspect network switch and network patch cable and are
continuing to troubleshoot the issue. Most services seem to be running
ok other than the web servers which to which connectivity has been intermittent.
The issue is not with the web servers themselves, however..

SPAMCOP
BLACKLIST
Sept 06, 2006
Our
mailserver is temporarily listed on the SPAMCOP anti-spam blacklist We
have submitted a request for SPAMCOP to remove us from their black list.
We are slated to be delisted automatically in 13 to 24 hours if they receive
no futher spam "from" us, but we haven't sent any spam, so it
may take longer.
It appears that one
of the buildings we manage where we offer high speed internet access was
compromised and an adult website was advertised at that IP address. Since
we are the administrators for the building, it appears that they traced
it back to us and improperly listed our mail server as a spam source,
even though we had nothing to do with the site at all and sent no spam.
We have contacted the building management as well as the tenant regarding
this issue yesterday. At this point, the compromised system no longer
displays the adult website, but we cannot control the advertisements being
sent from the spammers, so there's nothing we can do other than fight
it out with the SPAMCOP folks until they pull us off the list.

June 10, 2006
We've made
some adjustments to our anti-spam filters to improve their effectiveness.
We are going to continue making some changes over the next few weeks to

at upgrading our mail server to a new server and software versions, as
we are slowly running out of disk space on the main server.
Denial
of Service Attack
May 31, 2006 4:30

Integral
was hit with a denial of service attack starting about 4:30 this morning.
After contacting the source Internet Service Provider in California, who
tried to deactivate the port (unsuccessfully, as the source IP address
was spoofed), we managed to block the traffic, returning our operations
to more normal levels of traffic..

March
12, 2006 Primary Storage Server goes down in flames!
Our primary storage server failed this weekend
and has been retired from active service. This server contained the data
for our web sites and FTP sites. We activated a backup server and returned
all sites to operation. However, you should check to make sure your website
is the latest version (within the last 30 days). If you have trouble connecting
to the FTP server, please contact

February 14th, 2006 Estimated 45 minute
blackout due to primary UPS Failure
The primary backup battery that supplies power to our main
internet router and phone system failed completely today, taking us offline
for about 45 minutes. All of the servers and other equipment were running
find on their own UPS's, however, the main one that supplies power for
our main internet router failed completely and didn't even turn on. We
replaced the UPS with a new unit.
February 6th, 2006 Mail Server Bogged
Down 3:00 pm
The mail server is currently bogged down a bit. A client
sent a 4.6MB file to over 1400 users (that's 6.4 GB of mail!) on their
mail list at 12:53 pm, sucking up pretty much all of the available outbound
bandwidth before we caught it and moved it for processing after hours.
Comcast.net Email Problems
January 31, 2006
Integral customers are currently having problems
sending email to @comcast.net. This is because as of Friday January 27th,
Comcast began blocking messages from our server. At this point, we've
sent Comcast about 15 emails, left voice messages for their Network Abuse
group ( they don't accept phone calls, all you can do is leave a message
), and gotten 3 email responses from them telling us that they aren't
blocking us, which they obviously still are. Their last response to us
was that they aren't blocking us, which we rebutted at 6:21 am. As of
11:00 am today, I have just gotten off a half hour phone call with a supervisor
in tech support (in a different chain of command at Comcast), and they
are looking into it from their end. We have also attempted to call the
CEO of Comcast directly.

Comcast Spam Blacklist 6:21 am
As of 6:21 am today, we are still on the
Comcast mail blacklist. Anyone trying to send mail to an @comcast.net address will have their email bounced. We have been trying since last Friday to get off the list. We have made several phone calls
and about 10 emails to them at this point, but they there is no live person to talk to, only voicemail. In the email responses we have been getting, they keep telling us that they aren't blocking us. We are continuing to work on them.

CBL Spam Blacklist 2:28 pm
Somehow
we were placed on the CBL Spam blacklist again, causing some problems
in sending mail to servers that use the CBL blacklist. We requested that
they remove us from the list again. On January 19, 2005, we talked to
the CBL folks and they permanently removed us from the list. We talked
with the CBL folks yesterday, it looks like they had a problem and lost
some of 'good guy' entries.

We began shutting down all non-essential services other than Email. All
services should be restored to normal operation at this time.

Yesterday's mail server issue
We've
gotten some reports of missing email late yesterday afternoon from a couple
clients. We've done some digging and it looks like the problem started
around 3:35 pm Sunday afternoon and got progressively worse as the antivirus
system slowly went offline. So far, we haven't found any place that the
mail could be stuck in the server, all outstanding mail in the mail server
has been processed. We're going to be contacting the vendor's technical
support about this. In the mean time, we suggest that you resend or have
resent any mail between 3:35 pm Sunday and 8:45 am on Monday. We are monitoring
the server closely at this time to ensure that the current software updates
have resolved the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience.
11/28/05
9:00 am Mail Server Issue 7:50 am - 8:30 am
We noted
a problem where the mail server stopped processing mail at about 7:50
am today, it was due to the mail server's antivirus software. No mail
was lost but the mail was piling up to be delivered into everyone's mailboxes.
We've been having some stability problems with the antivirus software.
We updated to version 3.05.20 this morning after the problem from 3.05.09.

New Sober Virus
W32/Sober.Z@mm
has gained wide distribution since 21 November 2005. The worm arrives
as an attachment to e-mails that, in some cases, attempt to fool users
into opening the attachment with fake warnings from the FBI, CIA or from
the German BKA. Like other Sober variants, W32/Sober.Z@mm sends itself
in an attachment to e-mails written in both German and in English, depending
on the suffix of the recipient's e-mail address. The original Sober worm
W32/Sober.A@mm appeared roughly two years ago in October 2003 and became
one of the most widespread worms ever, wreaking havoc with computer networks
worldwide. Integral is seeing this as the primary virus we are currently
stopping, about 90% of the viruses are now Sober.Z from what we've seen
so far.
This newest member
of the Sober family is turning out to be the most extensive virus outbreak
of this year and has been classified as high risk by FRISK Software's
virus experts who will be monitoring the progress of the worm over the
next few days.

October
20, 2005 Email server antivirus/antispam software upgraded 11:15 a.m.
We upgraded
the email antivirus software today to deal with the issue that stopped
mail flow yesterday morning to Version 3.0.5.9.
October
19, 2005 Email server piles up mail, but was processed 6:25 - 6:45 a.m.
A spam
message with a corrupted message header temporarily stopped the flow of
mail in the mail server today, causing a backlog of about 12,500 messages.
We cleared the backlog and mail was delivered to mailboxes by 6:42 a.m.
We also scheduled to upgrade our anti-virus/anti-spam software to the
latest version on October 20, which should eliminate the problem with
some types of spam with corrupted headers from causing this problem.
October
18, 2005: AOL Blocks Integral Corp's Mail Server 3:10 pm.
We have
just found that AOL is currently blocking mail from our mail server because
some of their users have made a "complaint" (ie, clicked on
"this is spam" on some emails sent from our server).. We are
working to have the block removed, but AOL is typically not very cooperative
on this kind of thing. If your business is sending out emails to AOL users,
please make sure that all of them have opted to recieve that email. Integral's
Acceptable Use Policy prohibits the use of our services to send out SPAM.
If you find that you have to send large amounts of email regularly to
AOL users, you need to apply to be whitelisted so that your email is not
blocked, and does not cause all mail from our server to be blocked. Information
on how to do this is at: http://postmaster-us.info.aol.com/whitelist/index.html
. In the meantime, we have opened up a ticket with AOL to whitelist our
server so that more mail is not blocked, ticket# 159395450. In general,
this is a rolling block and mail is only blocked for 24-48 hours or more,
depending on the number of complaints. Our request to be removed from
the block should hopefully fix the problem sooner than that.

Server Web Mail may log you out
The web based email at icmailbox.com
may log you out. The server is under heavy load right now, we discovered
a bug in the 2.05 version of the antivirus software where it sent about
4500 messages back to the tech support guys at the antivirus software
vendor asking for a software key (laugh), so the server was really bogged
down. We caught it and shut that part down so the server can work it's
way through the backlog without having to deal several thousand extra
useless messages in addition to everything else.
September 28, 2005: 12:10 PM Mail
Server REBOOT SUCCESSFULL
The mail server was successfully rebooted
and the mail server is processing the backlog of messages now. It has
already processed 1500 messages in the last 10 minutes. Things may run
a bit more slowly until we work through the 40,000 message backlog.
MAIL SERVER REBOOT SCHEDULED FOR
12:00 PM CST TODAY 09/28/05
Around 11:30 pm last night we performed
some routine maintenance on the mail server, upgrading the mail server
software from version 8.14 to 8.21 and the antivirus software from 1.78
to 3.05.
This is part of the regular maintenance that we
perform on the servers to make sure that the mail server is running optimally
on the best software available. It is important that we keep our software
current with the latest versions to avoid security issues (viruses, exploits,
hackers, etc) and software bugs.
This maintenance usually happens late at night
or on weekends and usually has no problems. We ran several tests at the
time, including sending test viruses to the mail server and everything
seemed to be running ok.
However, later last night it appears that the antivirus
software blocked the delivery of mail between 11:30 to 8:30 am. At 8:30
am We reverted to an older version of the antivirus software and the mail
flow resumed. It appears that no email has been lost, all of the messageslast
night are queued up for delivery, but we have to restart the server to
get those messages processed.
Therefore, we will be rebooting the server at noon
today to process those messages.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have
caused.
8/15/05 10:10 a.m. Priority Security
Maintenance
In response to the new ZOTOB worm,
we performed a high priority security update on all servers to ensure
that we were protected against the new worm. Our Primary webserver was
off-line for 2 minutes this morning at 10:10 am, Backup Webserver for
2 minutes at 10:14 a.m., the mail server was rebooted at 10:15 am.for
2 minutes.

Virus
Slows Global Internet Traffic
January 25, 2003, 6:03 pm
By Reed
Stevenson and Kevin Krolicki
SEATTLE/LOS
ANGELES (Reuters) - Worldwide Internet traffic suddenly slowed down dramatically
for hours on Saturday, after a fast-spreading computer worm clogged pipelines
of the global network, officials said.
Experts
called it the most damaging attack on the Internet in 18 months as networks
across Asia, Europe and America were effectively shut down.
Even
though the worst of the disruptions appeared to have passed by Saturday
afternoon, some network disruption was likely to continue until Monday
when businesses return to work, experts said.
The explosive
spread of the malicious program nearly cut off Internet providers in South
Korea (news - web sites), disrupted automated bank teller machines in
the United States and made online surfing, shopping and e-mail access
difficult.
The exact
origin of the attack remained a mystery, and some experts warned that
more destructive variants of the worm could appear soon.
Known
as "SQL Slammer," the malicious program targets a previously
identified weakness in Microsoft Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) software
to shut down powerful server computers.
"It's
very fast and very effective," said Alfred Huger, Senior Director
of Engineering at Web security company Symantec Corp. (NasdaqNM:SYMC -
news) in Cupertino, California.
The worm
is a small program that quickly copies itself and sends rapid data requests
in search of other server computers that manage computer networks.
Unlike
an e-mail virus, the worm did not infect individual desktop computers,
experts said. Instead, the brunt of the attack was felt in exceptionally
slow download speeds and severe access to Web-based services such as online
banking and shopping, they said.
The damage
caused by the worm came from the way it overwhelmed networks by quickly
cloning itself and spreading to other computer servers, experts said.
"Basically
what it does is flood the pipeline, and that's what we're seeing,"
said Bill Murray a spokesman for the U.S.-government run National Infrastructure
Protection Center.
The current
version of the worm does not erase or steal data but more malign variants
created by copycat hackers could appear in a few days and cause even more
damage, said Joe Hartmann, Director of North American anti-virus research
for Trend Micro Inc. (4704.T) (NasdaqNM:TMIC - news)
"Someone
could add a destructive payload to this one," Hartmann said.
Because
the attack started at around midnight Eastern Time (0500 GMT) on Saturday,
Russ Cooper, a computer security expert at TruSecure Corp. said that the
worm might have been "seeded" in a number of machines by someone
in the United States, while other experts said they suspected that it
originated in Asia.
The Federal
Bureau of Investigation said it was looking into the incident but had
no indication who had created the malicious program.
The worm
quickly hit servers on the East Coast of the United States and Northern
Europe, said Tom Ohlsson, vice-president of marketing with Matrix NetSystems
Inc., a network monitoring firm.
At the
height of the attack Saturday morning in the United States, about 20 percent
of the data traffic being sent across the Internet was being lost in transit,
a rate at least 10 times higher than normal, he said.
As one
result, voice traffic over the Internet, often used by financial institutions
to connect far-flung trading floors, was effectively shut down.
The SQL
(pronounced "sequel") Slammer attack drew comparison to the
Code Red worm, one of the most costly security threats to the Internet
that struck in the summer of 2001. The authors of that malicious code
remain a mystery.
'ALL-OUT
ATTACK'
The worm
crashed almost all Internet services in South Korea, where 7 out of every
10 people are online. South Korea's largest Web access provider KT Corp.
(30200.KS) was brought down and other Web sites were taken offline. Government
officials called it an "all-out attack on the country's Internet
system."
In the
United States, Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC - news) said that customers
at a majority of its 13,000 automated teller machines were unable to process
transactions as a result of the worm.
It was
not immediately clear if other banks in the United States or elsewhere
experienced similar disruptions, although American Express customer service
representatives said they were unable to access customer and credit card
information.
At the
U.S. National Infrastructure Protection Center at FBI (news - web sites)
headquarters in Washington, investigators had captured the malicious virus
and were looking into its make-up.
The worm
targets servers that run Microsoft's SQL Server 2000 database software.
SQL Slammer
exploits a security hole that was apparently known since last July, although
a recently released critical security update, or patch, provides a fix
for the problem.
The latest
patch, called Service Pack 3, can be downloaded at Microsoft's Web site
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet).
Officials
from Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, were not immediately available,
but Microsoft said on its Web site that it was testing its latest patch,
released on Jan. 17.
About
150,000 to 200,000 servers have been compromised so far, said Vincent
Gullotto, Vice President of the Anti-virus Emergency Response Team at
Network Associates Inc. (NYSE:NET - news) in Beaverton, Oregon.
As of
Saturday afternoon, data loss on the Internet globally was running at
about double the normal rate, with the slowest connections in Asia and
Australia, experts said.
AOL Email Problems Dec 5, 2002
For some reason, our <cough> esteemed <cough> colleagues
at AOL have seen fit
to blacklist our mailserver as an open relay server that spammers can
use
to send spam email to people. This means that any email you send to AOL
users will be blocked and returned to you as undeliverable.
We are working to correct AOL's error and have contacted them to remove
us
from their blacklist. This is a new "feature" that AOL has just
added.
However, their testing methodology may be incorrect. AOL's mail server
refers us to visit www.mail-abuse.org, an anti-spam blacklist database,
as
the reason for denying mail from us. However, we're not on that list!
In fact, we aren't listed on 68 anti-spam blackslists, including ORDB,
MAPS,
OSLIST, SPAMHAUS, SPAMCOP, SPAMBAG, etc.
Integral is a firm believer in killing spam. Our server has been secured
against spam for some time. This is one of the primary reasons why you
must have authentication turned on for your outgoing mail.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope that the system administrators
at AOL correct their error as soon as possible.

On May
10th, Integral Corporation won the prestigious 2002 Small Business of
the Year Award in the Technology Category! With this award, Integral joins
an elite group of businesses that have been recognized for their commitment
to excellence. We are very grateful to have won this award. Even more,
we are grateful to you, our customers, for making this possible. Your
long-term faith in us has been key to our success. We greatly appreciate
your business and look forward to serving you in the future.
New
Mail Server - July 25, 2001
Integral has a new mail server at icmailbox.com. The new mail server offers better anti-spam and anti-relaying features, web mail access, web-based administration that allows us to designate an administrator at client sites for creating or deleting mail accounts, and even web-based calendaring! It can also handle up to 100,000 users. We are also investigating mail-server based antivirus packages. While this will not completely stop viruses from getting to you, particularly brand new viruses, it should greatly cut down on them.
We are slowly migrating email accounts over to the new server. The initial cost and continuing maintenance costs of the new mail server will probably require us to increase the price of a mailbox from its current token level of $1 per month to a slightly higher price that allows us to maintain the server properly.
In the next few months, we are considering adding a new DS1 dedicated line, which will require us to re-IP all web sites and services here at Integral. This process can be fairly disruptive, however, it will allow us to handle 10x as many web sites as we can currently.
March 1, 2001 - New WebTrends Web Site Visit Analysis
Starting today, we have added WebTrends Web Site Visit Analysis to
all of our standard (and above) web hosting packages who are on our
new Hydrogen and Helium servers. With these statistics, you can see
just how many people visit your web site, where they are going, who
they are, where they are from, and more! To see the statistics, go to
your web page, and view the webstat.htm page. For example, www.integralcorp.com/webstat.htm.We
will update your web site statistics once a week on Sunday nights.
January 1, 2001 - Switchover to new Dialup Numbers Complete
We have completed the switchover to our new dialup numbers. All dialup
usernames are now prefixed by a 5891 followed by your username for authentication
on the Radius server. Integral also has a shiny new APC Netshelter
rack. We are upgrading our web servers to new, more powerful rackmount
server systems and we will be consolidating all of our existing web
sites onto the new servers over the next couple months.
December 1, 2000 New Dialups Access Numbers Active
Our new dialup access numbers are now available, with coverage in 34
states nationwide. On January 1, 2001, we will terminate the old dialup
access number accounts. You should begin using the new dialup numbers,
along with the new dialup usernames and passwords that we sent out to
everyone on November 20th.

Integral is switching to Nextel phones for all of our consultants.
The new phones will have phone, pager, Internet text messaging, and radio
capabilities. We will now be able to answer your calls direclty
when we are on the road, or, if we are working at another client site,
you can leave voice mail or numeric messages directly on the phones we
carry with us. This should improve our response time considerably. The
radio capabilities will enable us to remain in radio contact with each
other as well, so that we can support each other with technical help much
more easily.
December 25, 1999 Happy
Holidays!
Integral
The fourth quarter and first quarter of any year is always very busy
for us. While it is a slow time for many of our customers, it
isn't for us. Many of our customers are spending their budgets
before year end. Others schedule to perform system work during
their slow time. And beginning in January, companies that ran
out of budget several months ago suddenly have new money to buy things
again. And then there's our own internal bookeeping, like year
end inventory, closing the fiscal year, etc, that ties us up.
Did I mention Y2K? Combined with the holidays, when some of our personnel
take time off, this tends make things kind of crazy here for a while.
We apologize for any slowdowns in our usual responsiveness.

Integral
This week, Integral won a bid with Argonne National Laboratories to
provide multiple Intel servers to be connected together in a Linux cluster,
sort of a parallel supercomputer. The plan is to hook up 18 dual
processor Pentium II systems together to provide the necessary horsepower
for physics calculations. Integral will provide and setup the
servers.
Also this week, a rate change notice will go out with the consulting
invoices raising our standard rates. The new rates will go into
effect in about 30 days, and be phased in over the next year or so.
Our last rate change was over 3.5 years ago, and we've grown quite a
bit since then. With the increased competition in hiring computer
professionals, and rises in the costs involved in being competitive
and providing better services, it's time.
